We are looking forward to learning some website design hints from Susan Bakshi from Antaresdesign.ca at the upcoming Winning Websites event on April 28th.
Antares Design is a small graphic design firm that started seven years ago under the leadership of Art Director, Alysa Kim. Before starting Antares, Alysa was the Advertising Art Director for a major publishing firm where she worked on major ad campaigns for companies large and small. Taking the experience she gained from her previous work, and her love of design, she has built a firm that focuses on client need. The favourite thing about our job is working with our clients: listening to their needs and then designing creative that reflects their vision.
Other then being an entrepreneur, who are you?
Well, I would say that I am a devoted mother, wife and daughter who is fiercely proud of her family. My background is environmental science (I learned marketing by “selling the planet” back in the 90s) and remain passionate about environmental issues. I am also a photographer.
What motivated you to go into business for yourself?
Alysa and I both realized that traditional work was too inflexible after we had children. We can get more done and be much more creative because of our set-up. We also wanted to work more directly with the client. Working in a large firm doesn’t always let you do that.
How do you overcome challenges and obstacles in your business?
Alysa and I work really well together. While we are both creative thinkers, we come from very different backgrounds and we can use this to our advantage. We problem solve by brainstorming and working together. Plus having a network of women you can call on in a pinch (and who can call on you) is a lifesaver.
What are your greatest strengths as an entrepreneur?
Without a doubt a love for the job! If we didn’t love what we did, I couldn’t imagine making this work.
