Tell us about your business.
Sparrow offers web content writing and editing services for small business owners. As an SEO copywriter, I ensure my clients’ web pages, blog posts, and ebooks are engaging, well-written, and optimized. I also offer training for new business owners in my areas of expertise via a series of ebooks available on my website and kindle.
Who are you outside of work?
I’m a creative, fun-loving, adventurous mom who loves spending time with my kids. I cook, bake, sew, sing, dance, craft, dream and scheme with my young family every spare second I have.
What motivated you to start your business or choose your profession?
I was unhappy with a series of frustrating positions that didn’t allow me to shine at what I did best. Starting a business was an opportunity to give myself the promotion I couldn’t find anywhere else, so I could truly do what I love and work flexible hours around my family. When daycare unexpectedly fell through very suddenly, I was forced to evaluate my job, whether I was content, and took the opportunity to start Sparrow.
How do you overcome business challenges or obstacles?
I like to overcome challenges and solve problems by reading, talking with others who are further ahead in their businesses, and simply making a plan and sticking to it.
What are your greatest strengths?
Sensitivity, compassion, creativity, insight, the ability to dream and manifest by will and persistence. A childlike wonder and curiosity about everything. A great memory. The determination to learn.
What are your favourite business tools?
Social media, though there is much I could learn. Simply my computer and the internet, which make it possible for me to work anywhere I like.
What are you most passionate about?
Giving my children a wonderful childhood they remember fondly. Using my creativity every day to make life better for me and my family, and hopefully connect with and touch other people.
Who is your greatest business mentor and why?
I really admire Christine O’Kelly of SEO Content Solutions, which she built from nothing when she left a secure but draining job, and has grown it into an entirely mom-run organization, staffed by amazing, dedicated, talented writers and project managers.
What advice would you give to other business owners?
Make the leap! If you’re creative, intelligent and ambitious you CAN go out on your own and be a success.
What is the most helpful business book you have read and why?
“Real You Incorporated” by Kaira Sturdivant Rouda. This book knocked down all the assumptions I had about business, and showed me that being authentic trumps wearing the corporate suit and mask and squashing your personality in favour of The Company. Really inspirational and liberating.
