You are your business and your brand. When people buy your product or service in some way they are buying into you and what you bring to the table. As a result when it comes to the issue of advertising it would be a disservice if you didn’t advertise You. In this day and age with phone cameras at everyone’s finger tips advertising you means being prepared to smile for the camera.
Everything you do, the way you handle yourself, your appearance, demeanor, speech patterns, the clothes you wear, your business card are all an advertisement of you. When you are at a charity event, networking or at a casual tweet up you are advertising you.
When you attend these events what happens when you hear the words, "Smile for the camera?" Do you hold your head up high, grin and pose like you mean it as a representative of your brand or company? Or do you think to yourself, "I look terrible." Is your automatic response to raise your hands in front of your face and say "Oh no, not now," and then escape to the restroom?
Your response to “Smile for the camera” is based on your beliefs. In fact everything you say, do, feel or think is based on your belief systems.
What is a belief?
It’s a statement held by the mind as truth. When encountered by snap happy photogs your thoughts and behaviors are indicators of how you feel and what you believe about yourself.
For instance, if you believe you are smart and beautiful full of self-esteem and confidence, you likely love getting your picture taken regardless of the circumstance.
If you think you are unattractive, less then perfect or hold general negative feelings about yourself and your abilities, the sight of a person wielding a camera might cause you great discomfort.
Reflect for a moment on the last time you had your picture taken whether at a work event or family function. What were your thoughts, feelings and behaviors?
Examine what you’ve discovered. Are your beliefs positive and life-enhancing; great tools to help you advertise you; move your business forward and achieve what you want in life? Or are your beliefs and behaviors hindering you from having the life you dream of? Your beliefs will either move you forward or hold you back in your business.
If what you have discovered is less than stellar don’t worry there is hope.
If you sense that you are holding limiting beliefs you can change them. Just gaining some awareness of your beliefs is a good start. Some people change their beliefs by using affirmations or reading inspirational books. Others need a deeper transformative solution like belief therapy.
Imagine feeling so good about yourself that the next time you hear the words "Smile for the camera," you slap on a big grin and pose like you mean it because you believe in yourself, your business and delight in advertising You.
